Youth Summer Reading 2022

         All programs are free!

 The Youth Summer Reading Program is for children ages 3 to going into 6th grade.  Those going into 6th grade have the option of staying with the youth program or moving up to the Teen Program.

Registration June 10 – July 8
Two ways to participate: Online through Beanstack or in person with paper log and stickers.  The two programs are identical, it’s just that one is done completely online and the other is done with a paper log and stickers.


In Person: Register in person, online (www.MiOPL.org), or by phone (248) 969-9491. If you register online or by phone you must come in to pick up your materials by July 8. 

  • Upon registering, you will be given a reading log and stickers.
  • You will keep track of the days you read beginning on the day you register.
  •  For every day you read (or someone reads to you) at least 20 minutes, you put a sticker on your reading log.
  • Each time you read 5 days, you will earn a reading coin.
  • Save up your reading coins to buy books in our Story Room Bookstore where we have a large selection of books for all ages.  Shopping will be available at the end of the program. Don't lose your coins because we cannot replace lost coins.
  • If you read at least 25 days by the end of the program, you will be invited to the Award Celebration, receive a prize bag and a certificate.

Online (Beanstack Program): Register at Beanstack or through the Beanstack Tracker app on your mobile device.

  • You will keep track of the days you read beginning on the day you register. 
  • For every day that you read (or someone reads to you) at least 20 minutes, you will log your day on Beanstack.
  • Each time you reach 5 daysyou will earn a point. 
  • Save up your points to buy books in our Story Room Bookstore where we have a large selection of books for all ages.  Shopping will be available at the end of the program. 
  • If you read at least 25 days by the end of the program, you will be invited to the Award Celebration, receive a prize bag and certificate.


 Award Celebration

An award celebration will be held outside on Tuesday, August 9 at the library for anyone who reads at least 25 days over the course of the program. Note: To receive an invitation, you must hand in your reading log with at least 25 days read by August 6 (in-person program) or have logged 25 days on Beanstack (online program).  More information about this will be given to you when you register for Summer Reading.

 
Early Literacy Programs

Early Literacy Summer Challenge 2022 (children under age 3)

Complete fun activities with your little one that help build early literacy skills. 
Register at Beanstack beginning June 10.

1000 Books Before Kindergarten (Ages 0-5)
1000 Books Before Kindergarten is a Library program that encourages all families and caregivers to read at least 1000 books with their young children before they enter Kindergarten. Reading to preschool-age children builds vocabulary, language skills, and helps prepare them with the skills they need for Kindergarten. In as little as 15 minutes a day, families can build the skills for future school and life success.  Visit the Youth Services desk to get started.

Storytime Outside at the Library (All ages)
Bring your lunch and a blanket to the lawn next to the library (south side) for stories and songs.  In case of rain, storytime will be held indoors in Community Room B.

Make & Take Crafts (All ages)

Is the pirate’s life for you? Do you have what it takes to sail the high sea? Join us for a time of swashbuckling fun!

Lights in the Ocean Deep (Children entering 2nd - 6th Grades)
Deep in the ocean, unusual creatures glow in the dark.  Learn about some of them and then craft a glow-in-the-dark lanternfish.

Outdoor Fun (Children entering 2nd - 6th Grades)
Burn off some energy with outdoor games and lots of fun in the sun.

The Amazing Octopus (Children entering 2nd - 6th Grades)
Learn about the amazing true adventure of an octopus from New Zealand.  Then, create your own no-sew “socktopus” to take home.

Introduction to Wood Carving (Children entering 2nd - 6th Grades)
Gerry and Michelle Burchard will bring their love of wood working to OPL.  They will show the children how to do some basic wood carving/wood burning with simple tools.  They will teach the children how to safely use the tools to make an artistic design.

Summer Entertainment, registration required for all programs

Save Our Oceans/Live Animal Program (All ages)
We live on land but share our planet with a huge variety of sea life. Many animals like amphibians, turtles, crocodiles, and others, live on both land and sea. In this program, we explain the links between ocean and land animals. The importance of protecting our ecosystems is explained in this fascinating program which features a variety of live animals.

Caribbean Steel Drums (All Ages) Library Friends' sponsored event
Come sail away with us, across the clear, blue waters of the Caribbean to exotic islands and sandy beaches. Caribbean music is as rich and diverse as the culture from which it came. Rumba, Salsa, Reggae, and Calypso are just a few examples. The Gratitude Steel Band will send the audience on an adventure through the islands on a colorful cloud of musical celebration

Oceans of Possibili-Mysteries - Comedy/Juggling (All ages) 
This summer, Mat Emerick a.k.a. Professor Snoopenheimer sets sail for the "Seven Seas of Mysteries" where he will snoop out Legendary Giant Sea Creatures like the prehistoric shark MEGALODON, the shipwrecking octopus KRAKEN, and slithering sinister SEA SERPENTS! Do they exist? Some say Yes and some say No! Your kids will say "YES, YES, YES" to the fun time they'll have as they snoop out these great mysteries with Professor Snoopenheimer!

Hang 10 with Surfer Joel as he brings an ocean of books to life!  Featuring magical surprises, wacky stunts, and lots of audience participation, this wholesome show will have kids & grown-ups laughing out loud and crazy about reading!
