We call them lakes, but by any measure the Inland Seas can create weather conditions as fierce and treacherous as any on salt water. Through three centuries of navigation, several thousand Great Lakes vessels have been lost. Most feared by freshwater mariners are the cyclonic weather systems that develop in autumn, and center around November 10th. It was on this date that the "gales of November" claimed S.S. Edmund Fitzgerald, but there have been many more destructive storms. Presented by the Detroit Historical Society.
