Teen Winter Reading Program: Make It Work!

From December 6, 2014 to February 1, 2015

Fill out a one sentence review for each book you read during the winter reading program. Random drawings for some great prizes. In honor of the Smithsonian Exhibit being at OPL, try reading some of the work-themed suggestions we have on display, or ask your Librarians!

You know you should read over the holidays anyway, so Make it Work!

Smithsonian Exhibit: Teen Essay Competition "The Way We Will Work"

December 6 -January 17

Oxford Middle and High School students, this is your chance to be immortalized forever in an exhibit that will travel the entirety of the United States. Write an essay that focuses on what YOU believe your future in the work world will be like: jobs, conditions, location etc.

Essays must be between 500-750 words each and submitted to the Teen Services Desk between December 6, 2014 and January 17, 2015.

The essays will be judged by library staff, digitized to become part of the museum exhibition and will be placed in our local history collection here at Oxford Public Library.

Prizes will be awarded for first ($15), second ($10) and third ($5) places for each school.

Ongoing Drop-In Programs in the Teen Department

   Bored? Play Games! Saturdays

Third Saturdays

Next Session: 12/20/2014,

1/17, 2/21

12:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.

It may sound counterproductive, but board games (or card games or puzzles, for that matter) are a surefire cure for the dreaded affliction of boredom. So drop in and play!

#TeenCraftSaturdays @ OPL

First Saturdays, 12/6, 1/3 and 2/7
12:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. (or until supplies run out)

You know you have to stop by the library anyway because that BIG project is due Monday, so why not take a study break and create something fun? All projects make use of "upcycling", so they're both fun and environmentally friendly. These programs are drop-in only, so be sure to get here early!

12/6: Magazine Trees: This puts a creative and "green" spin on the traditional holiday decoration. We'll show you how to fold old magazines into trees, which you can then decorate, or leave plain and simple.

1/3: Decorate a Tote Bag: While cleaning out a cupboard for last Spring’s big renovation, we discovered a bunch of really cool blank canvas tote bags. All they need is to be decorated—by YOU! Stop by the Teen department and have a go.

2/7: Decorate a Mask: February is Mardi Gras! So what better way to celebrate than to make a mask, using a plain simple mask base, craft supplies and your imagination.
